In 1990, with only 61 members and a passion for drum corps, Carolina Crown elected to compete in the Open Class (now known as World Class). Thanks to a partnership with the Parks & Recreation Department, and the establishment of a partnership with the Mecklenburg Council of the Boy Scouts of America as Explorer Post #588, along with a lot of luck and a lot of help, the corps was able to take the field for competition. In 1995, Crown moved from Charlotte to Belmont, NC. Following the 1997 season, the corps relocated to its present home of Fort Mill, South Carolina.
