2015 Local Corps Member: Corey Hatfield

Performing Corps: Phantom Regiment

Evansville Westsider Corey Hatfield  is currently in spring training with Phantom Regiment up in Rockford, IL! A 2014 graduate of F.J. Reitz HS, Corey is a tuba player and music education major at Iowa State University. This summer marks Corey’s third season in the powerful Phantom Regiment contra line.

Last year around this time, Corey was ready to bring the Regiment back to Evansville and march in his home show…THIS summer, the Regiment is heading out to California for the west coast DCI tour.

Corey says Phantom’s show this year “City of Light” is based on the music of Paris and is styled as “more of a concept show” than the story-line shows of the past few years. “I am very excited for new staff and a different style of show,” he said. “The horn line has been working very hard… this summer is going to really be something special!”

Have a great summer and California tour — we’ll see you back in the Midwest in July and August!

Performing Corps: Madison Scouts

Local trumpeter Austin Armstrong is having the summer of his life as a first year member of the Madison Scouts! Austin is currently up at spring training up in Trafalgar, IN…somewhere between Bloomington and Indianapolis. He’s a 2014 graduate of Jasper HS, currently studying music education at Murray State University.

Austin says he couldn’t imagine being anywhere else right now. “I wanted to march because I’ve always loved marching music, and I wanted to take it to the next level. I saw my first DCI show in 2011 at MTSU and I have been hooked ever since!” He said the Madison Scouts perfectly match what he was looking for in a drum corps: “I auditioned for Madison because I felt connected there. I am an Eagle Scout, and the ideals of the Madison Scouts are something I can be proud of and carry with me for the rest of my life!”

While we’ll miss having the fan-favorite Scouts at DRUMS on the OHIO this year, you can see Austin & his comrades perform at a couple of nearby early season shows in Indianapolis and Muncie, IN. And we’re very confident we’ll see the Scouts back at DOTO in the years to come! Have a great summer, Austin, best of luck!

11063763_873905176015650_4043733478468911953_oWith our focus on the Colts Drum & Bugle Corps this week, we meet Jesson Walters, marching euphonium in his second season with the Colts of Dubuque, Iowa! Jesson also previously marched with the Music City Drum and Bugle Corps in the summer of 2013.

Jesson grew up in Indiana and learned to play trombone at Castle South Middle School, and continued in high school as a member of the Castle Marching Knights. Over the time spent in the Castle band he formed many friendships and learned the value of teamwork.

After two years at Castle, he moved to Louisiana in early 2013. Jesson recently graduated from West Monroe High School and plans to continue to march in college at the University of Louisiana at Monroe this fall, majoring in music education.

Jesson moves up to Iowa this weekend for spring training, or the “Cornfield Tour” as the Colts call it. “It is great being a part of an organization that treats one another so much like a family, and no matter what happens those family members will always be there for you,” he said. “I can’t wait to start performing in front of my friends and family at the Reitz Bowl and all across the country!” Have fun out in those Iowa cornfields Jesson, we’ll see you and the Colts in Evansville June 24!

Performing Corps: Carolina Crown

11233563_871429166263251_3651660635659507109_nAs the DCI season approaches, many corps are “moving in” this weekend.David Altman of Newburgh, IN, is headed to spring training tonight in North Carolina as a new member of 2013 DCI champion Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps.

David actually grew up in North Carolina, before moving to Newburgh, IN and joining the Castle Marching Knights his freshman year. Once he officially graduates from Castle later this month, he’ll be headed to Ball State University this fall, studying Music Education and Music Composition.

David will join the euphonium section of Carolina Crown, and is excited about the opportunities that lay ahead. “I chose to march with Crown because they have the strongest brass program and the best educational opportunities for brass musicians.” He also feels that he’s already “part of the team” in the championship corps. “At Crown it is one uniform, one sound, and we are all essential to the success of the program. I feel more unified and part of the band of brothers there. That’s just how the atmosphere is when you’re surrounded by people with the same goal and level of determination,” he said.

David can’t give many clues about Crown’s 2015 production just yet, but says “let’s just say Crown show will be on fire when we take the field!” Best of luck this summer David, we’ll see you in Indianapolis at the DCI championships in August!
