Katherine (Kate) Alward from Owensboro, Kentucky will be marching with the Carolina Crown Guard this year. At the young age of 15, she was offered her first contract with Carolina Crown. “I attended my first DCI show, DRUMS on the OHIO, at 8 years old. I knew then that I wanted to march drum corps,” says Kate. At the end of her first season, she was awarded the Most Improved Guard member. This will be the Davies County High School student’s third year with Crown. Kate has taught choreography for the Davies County High School WGI Winds. That group has earned the bronze medal two years in a row. She has also been a member of the Winterguard International Group Eklipse.

Not only is Kate an accomplished color guard member, but she is also an accomplished winds player. Kate says, “I knew that I wanted to play a woodwind instrument in the band, so I joined color guard so that I could eventually march DCI.” Clarinet, Basson, and Saxophone are the main instruments that she plays. She has participated in KMEA All State Band, 2nd District All District Band, Western Kentucky Quad State Honor Band, and the Murray State Jazz Festival.

“The past two summers have been about learning how to survive drum corps and looking like a professional while doing it. This summer, I would like to not only build my skills, but also build new friendships.”

Kate is an outstanding student as well. She is set to graduate from Davies County with a 4.0. She is also going to be graduating with 6 Advance Placement courses and 21 hours of college credit. Kate is looking to pursues both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Music Education.

In her free time, Kate enjoys hanging out with friends in study sessions, hanging out in coffee shops, and volunteering for service projects with my high school chapter of The National Honor Society, and Spanish Club.

Carolina Crown will be traveling across the country, performing at 24 events this year. All leading up to DCI World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana on August 8-10. We wish Katherine the best of luck this season!
